PUM

For more than 30 years, PUM has been playing an important role in the field of international development assistance, sending senior experts to more than 76 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe. PUM experts offer their skills and experience for a period of two to three weeks to businesses and organisations in places where these are most needed.

PUM experts have extensive experience in nearly every conceivable field. The experts are independent and work on a voluntary basis. They do not receive a salary or reimbursement for their assistance. Since PUM was founded in 1978, it has become Europe’s largest ‘job agency’ for professional volunteers.

A challenging goal

PUM’s goal can best be defined by this challenging phrase: 'Work defeats poverty'. The programmes are geared towards fighting poverty and encouraging sustainable development in social free-market economies around the world. This goes hand-in-hand with building a healthy and free society. To accomplish this task, PUM aims to improve business climates, stimulate the creation of new employment and assist in the changeover to cleaner means of production. To ensure a favourable business climate, PUM maintains close ties with labour unions, employer organizations, chambers of commerce and creditors. Because cooperation is essential for future development, PUM also mediates between clients and Dutch firms.

Customer information

PUM has experts in every conceivable field, who work on a voluntary basis: they do not receive a salary. They are driven by enthusiasm, the desire to contribute and the challenge of helping local small and medium sized businesses grow. Developing countries value PUM's reservoir of expertise. Entrepreneurs in these countries have had many positive experiences with the Dutch senior experts. And nearly all experts speak of invigorating experiences and warm memories.

Most of PUM’s clients are medium or small-sized businesses and organisations in developing countries. By clearly defining the goals of its two to three-week missions in advance, PUM ensures that the assistance will reach those who need it most.

PUM clients must demonstrate that they cannot afford to pay for external advisors. Subsidiaries of foreign companies do not qualify for assistance. The firm or organisation must be prepared to pay for the expert's local costs, such as housing and other expenses.
